Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.

Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth comes a companion volume to the worldwide bestselling DIVERGENT series, told from the per-spective of the immensely popular character Tobias. The four pieces included here—THE TRANSFER, THE INITIATE, THE SON, and THE TRAITOR—plus three additional exclusive scenes, give readers an electrifying glimpse into the history and heart of Tobias, and set the stage for the epic saga of the DIVERGENT trilogy.

From the beginning, I already had a high expectations from this book. As you probably know, I love Divergent, but I didn't quite enjoy Insurgent, and I never read Allegiant because I already know how it end. That's why I had a high expectations from this book, because the setting was before Divergent and its from Tobias' POV.

There are 4 short stories in this book. The first one, The Transfer, is about Tobias' life before he choose Dauntless. I already know that Tobias has a rough childhood, but I never knew why. After read this story, the reasons were still unclear for me, but now I know how Tobias got the courage to escape his father, even when he still fear him.

The second one, The Initiate, is about Tobias' Dauntless initiation until he passed. Some things from Tobias' initiation are different from Tris' initiation, but many of them are same. Also in this book, we learn how Tobias (whose name already changed into Four) learn to adapt with Dauntless' lifestyle, and how he made friends (Zeke--who's funny as usual--and Shauna) and enemy (Eric!).

The Son--the third story--is about Tobias' life after he passed the initiation. You probably already know this--since he ranked first, Max offered him a to participate in a training to be a Dauntless leader, along with Eric. This story is pretty much the start of Dauntless-Erudite-alliance. In this story too, we know why Tobias decide to resign and chose to be an instructor instead.

The fourth story, The Traitor, is the only story that's about an event in Divergent told in Tobias' POV. The story start from Visiting Day until a scene after Tobias and Tris' kissing scene that wasn't included in Divergent. In my opinion, this story is the most interesting yet less interesting than the other stories. Interesting because I had always want to know what if Divergent was told in Tobias' POV, but less interesting since I already know about the scenes.

Beside those stories, there's also 3 exclusive scenes from Divergent told in Tobias' POV (Basically like The Traitor, just shorter). Overall, this book is pretty great, but the greatest thing I found in this book is Veronica Roth actually wrote '<4' in this book!!!

  1. Hi, I found you on good reads. I read the first book in the series and half of the second. I do want to read this one too. Unfortunately people's enthusiasm spoiled the third book for me. I was a little bummed when I found out how everything went down in allegiant.
That said I will still read this book and I will finish up insurgent and allegiant.
If anything I'd like to finish the series before watching the final two movies.
I love four but I would really like a story about Eric. That would be pretty interesting. Maybe a story about the president. I forgot her name. LOL. I want to story about her but I can't even remember her name!

    1. Well, yeah, though I didn't like Eric, a story about him would be interesting. The president? Do you mean Jeanine? You really have an interest with the villain haha :)

  2. I've been wondering if I should read these short stories or not. I wasn't sure when exactly in his life they took place, but they sound interesting.

Also, I'm nominating you for the Versatile Blogger Awards. If you want to participate the rules can be found here:

    1. You should read it! If you enjoy the Divergent trilogy, I think you'd enjoy this book too. And thanks for the nomination, Lindsey :)

  3. Am I the only person alive to not have read this series???? I'm gonna start on it soon-ish.

    1. omgg yess its really good! Though personally I only enjoy Divergent and Four, I think the other books are great too :)
