Sonny Ardmore is an excellent liar. She lies about her dad being in prison. She lies about her mom kicking her out. And she lies about sneaking into her best friend's house every night because she has nowhere else to go.
Amy Rush might be the only person Sonny shares everything with— secrets, clothes, even a nemesis named Ryder Cross.
Ryder's the new kid at Hamilton High and everything Sonny and Amy can't stand—a prep-school snob. But Ryder has a weakness: Amy. So when Ryder emails Amy asking her out, the friends see it as a prank opportunity not to be missed.
But without meaning to, Sonny ends up talking to Ryder all night online. And to her horror, she realizes that she might actually like him. Only there's one small catch: he thinks he's been talking to Amy. So Sonny comes up with an elaborate scheme to help Ryder realize that she's the girl he's really wanted all along. Can Sonny lie her way to the truth, or will all her lies end up costing her both Ryder and Amy?

*I receive an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. Thank you Hodder Children's Books for the book!
One of the reasons I like The Duff is because how Kody wrote it. I can't really explain it, but it could make me connect with the characters better--an eventually, like it--no matter how much they annoyed me. In short, Kody's writing style is fit with my mind. That's why, when I see this in Netgalley, I immediately request it.
I admit that I'm a little hesitate when I'm about to read it. I mean, lying is not a good thing, and a book where the main characters is an expert in lying? Doesn't sound good. But Kody didn't disappoint me. Somehow, I still enjoy this book and it also made me cry in the middle of the night.
Sonny Ardmore is an expert in lying. She literally lie everywhere and everytime to everyone, except to her bestfriend, Amy Rush (she's Wesley Rush's sister). Like any other books that has 2 bestfriend, Sonny and Amy is the exact opposite. Amy is everything Sonny isn't--rich, beautiful, shy, quiet, and mostly, she is really bad at lying. I, of course, prefer Amy than Sonny, but that was before I know why she lie. Seriously, the reason behind all of her lies is really heartbreaking and make me cried in the middle of the night. I'm definitely not going to spoil it, but she lied not to make herself look good, but it's more about accepting the truth to herself.
Even though the summary indicate that this book is mostly about romance, I think it's more about friendship. Sonny and Amy have that kind of friendship that everybody want. They have their ups and downs, yet they manage to go through it. Their friendship is really strong and beautiful.
Overall, Lying Out Loud is a great book about accepting the truth. If you like The Duff (there's Bianca and Wesley in this book, and they still as funny as they are in The Duff!), you might enjoy this one.
Great review, Tiffany! I loved this one too, especially Amy and Sonny's friendship :)
ReplyDeleteTheir friendship is beautiful! Glad we both enjoy it :)
DeleteI haven't read The DUFF yet but I've seen the movie and it's pretty hilarious. I'm planning to get on the book as soon as I can. When I saw this book and that Wesley's sister is going to be the main character, I became really interested. I've also read Kody's Shut Out and I enjoyed it. I guess I'll enjoy this one too! Great review, Tiffany! <3
ReplyDeleteThe movie and the book is actually really different, but both are hilarious (because Wesley and Bianca's banter :D). I haven't read Shut Out yet, but there's Cash and Lissa cameo in this book!
DeleteI really enjoyed The DUFF. As you said, author wrote characters so brilliantly that I had no other choice but to like them. So I am glad to hear that it is the same in this book as well. I hope to read it someday soon :) Great review, Tiffany!
ReplyDeleteYes! Kody's writing style is great and addictive. You should read this :)
DeleteI LOVEEEE THIS AUTHOR! I agree about the writing. Kody Keplinger does have that kind of honest writing that sounds like believable teenagers' voices. A Midsummer's Nightmare is actually one of my favorite books last year so I'm especially stoked to read her work. :D Great review, Tiff!
ReplyDeleteYESS! That's probably why I could connect with the character no matter how much I'm annoyed by her. Haven't read that one, but I want to! Nathan and Whitley made an appearance here :D
DeleteI'm so excited to read this one! I only read The DUFF to get ready for the movie, and to be honest, I preferred the movie to the novel. However, this one has been on my TBR for a while now, so I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteThe movie and the book is really different, but honestly, I can't choose xD I like both in a different way. Hope you enjoy this one too!
DeleteI just reviewed this one and I agree with everything you said. There's just something about Kody's writing that makes the book so entertaining. I struggled a lot with Sonny's lying but I also understood her. I just wish she had lied to Amy! :(
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Tiffany!
Glad to know that someone like Kody's writing too :D Sonny pissed me off too like almost all the time, but I understood her especially after I know the reason behind her lies. It make me cry in the middle of the night xD
DeleteSqueeeeeeeeeeeee!!! So happy to see such a great review for this book. I read The DUFF recently and absolutely loved it. But the other two books I have read by the author I didn't enjoy as much. It had made me quite nervous to get to this, as I really want to love it. But hopefully I enjoy it as much as you do.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't enjoy the other books! I haven't read anything by Kody except The Duff and this book, and I'm pretty glad that I like both. Well, hope you like this one, then! :)
