Ten Books That Celebrate Diversity/Diverse Characters

Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature hosted by the Broke and the Bookish

This week's topic is diverse books. Truthfully, I haven't read many books that celebrate diversity, but since I'm also a minority (I'm Chinese-Indonesian), I'd like to read more about books that celebrate diversity. Here's books that I've read/planning to read that celebrate diversity :

This book basically scream diversity! The heroine, Elyse, is a black teen who lost her voice due to an accident. I really love how Sarah write Elyse because it's realistic.

2. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

It's been a long time since I read this book but I remember that Lola has 2 dads. Back when I read it (I was 13), I was pretty confused how Lola could have 2 dads (LGBTQ is illegal in my country, so I rarely heard it). But now I understand about it, it's beautiful. Both Lola's dads are very funny and they obviously love each other.

3. Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

The MC's love interest, Ridge, is deaf. But he's a very talented guitar player. He even wrote music by himself! I love how Sydney (the MC) and Ridge interact through text message. It's unique and beautiful.

4. To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Haven't read this one, but Lara Jean is a Korean American girl. It's something that I never read before, so I'd like to try this one.

5. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I bet y'all have heard or read this book. Seriously, this book seems to be everywhere! I'm curious why  many people think this book is awesome, so I really need to read this one (also the Oreo thing)

6. The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Also a book that I see everywhere and have yet to read. This one feature an Arabian character and the plot seems interesting.

7. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

I actually didn't really like this one, but Perfect Chemistry feature a Latina character, and quite many might I add.

8. Anything Could Happen by Will Walton

The MC, Tretch, is a gay who lives in small town and he didn't know how to come out. Also, he's in love with his straight bestfriend. I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds awesome, right?

9. I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

From the reviews I've read, this book seems to make people cry, and I love that kind of books! Also, it feature LGBTQ.

10. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Many books by Cassandra Clare feature diversity. The Mortal Instruments feature minority ethnic and LGBTQ.

So that's my list! I admit that I only have read 5 of these books, but I'm looking forward to read the rest and other diverse books. How's your list?

  3. I have just finished Summer of Chasing Mermaids, and it was diverse for sure, and I too liked how she wrote the story and used a lot of the culture involved, but I guess I sort of glossed over all the diversity, you know? Great list though Tiffany! :)
