Blog Tour : The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell (Interview + Giveaways)

Saturday, July 29, 2017

Welcome to my stop for The Last Magician blog tour! This book was released a few days ago, and I'm super excited to read it. Below, you'll find my interview with the author herself, Lisa Maxwell, as well as giveaways (yes, plural). But first thing first, here's some info about the book :

Title : The Last Magician
Author : Lisa Maxwell
Genre : YA fantasy
Release Date : July 18th, 2017
Publisher : Simon Pulse

Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. Hi Lisa! Thank you so much for being here. So first question, describe The Last Magician in 5 words or less?
Gangs of NY with Magic

2. What gives you the idea for The Last Magician?
The whole world of the book took a lot of work to pull together, but it all started because I wanted to write a badass girl thief. I used to love the show Leverage, and I loved Parker. I wanted someone like her—someone who was so ridiculously good at what she did, but I had this idea that she needed to be magical. I’m not sure where I got the image of a thief who could move through time, kind of like the bullet-time effect they used in the Matrix, but everything else came from there.

3. I read one of of your books, Unhooked, earlier this year (and I love it!). Compared to Unhooked, would you say The Last Magician is harder or easier to write?
So. So. So much harder. TLM was a much bigger story. I wrote UNHOOKED as a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) book, so I drafted most of it in a flurry of words. But TLM took a lot of time to build, a lot more time to research, and then piecing the story all together took longer than anything else I’ve ever written. There was something about the book that was so much harder. I had to really work for it.

4. Out of all your characters in The Last Magician, which one is your favorite to write and why?
That’s such a hard question because I love them all, but I’d say that the character that came easiest for me was Viola, the assassin. She’s Italian…I’m the granddaughter of Italian immigrants. There was a lot about who she was as a character that felt like putting myself in the text. She’s not really like me at all, but writing her was a little cathartic, I guess.

5. Can you share any random facts about The Last Magician?
The book took a long time to title. I didn’t have the title until well into the writing process. But without giving too much away, I can say that the last magician is a real (i.e., not fictional) person.

This book sounds awesome, isn't it? Thanks again, Lisa!

And now, here's the part you guys (probably) waiting for...
